Guidelines to write a paragraph:
q Read
the given guidelines or clues carefully and find the content of the paragraph.
q Write
the headline of the paragraph in bold letters. The beginning letter of every
content word in the headline is written in capital letters.
q Topic
sentence: The single sentence that expresses the central idea of the
paragraph is called the topic sentence. It is the summary sentence of the
paragraph. The paragraph normally begins with the topic sentence. However, it
can be written in the middle and at the end.
q Elaboration:
The topic sentence is elaborated with the help of explanation, examples,
illustrations, supporting details, reasons, related facts, comparative facts,
etc.
q One
paragraph: A paragraph normally consists of only one paragraph.
q Order:
The series of information is written in the correct order: a) according to the
order of time, b) according to the order of place or position – far to near /
near to far / outside to inside / inside to outside and c) in a logical order.
q Types:
a) Descriptive: describing places,
things – giving factual and accurate information – e.g. ‘Village’, ‘Town’,
‘Country’, ‘School’, ‘Building’.
b) Narrative:
narrating events, history, stories, biography, autobiography – narrating the
subject matter – e.g. ‘Bike Accident you Witnessed’.
c) Reflective:
describing experiences, habits, politics, discipline (abstract natured topics)
– reflecting the writer’s opinions upon the topic – e.g. ‘Democracy’.
d) Argumentative: describing the saying,
quotation, exposition – trying to clarify the writer’s opinion by mentioning
arguments on the topic – e.g. ‘Pen is Mightier than Sword’.
